What is renovation insurance?

Renovation insurance, renovation home insurance or home renovation insurance as it’s also known, protects your property while renovation works are being undertaken.  If you’re doing a significant amount of work on a property – installing a new kitchen or bathroom, re-roofing it, or excavating a basement, for example – then you’re increasing the risk to your property, its contents and the people who live or work in it.  Renovation insurance provides an extra level of insurance protection while the works are being carried out by covering things such as:

  • Accidental injury
  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Property damage

What can renovation home insurance cover?

Renovation insurance is a flexible policy that can cover a wide range of risks, including:

  • Accidental damage of building supplies and contents including accidents arising from flood or fire
  • Damage to the structure of the property
  • Empty property insurance, if you can’t stay in the property for more than 30 days owing to the renovations
  • The theft or loss of building materials, tools and equipment including rented equipment such as hired-in plant
  • Damage to a neighbouring property because of the work being undertaken on yours
  • Public liability - having public liability insurance as part of your renovation insurance will protect you financially should someone be injured or have their property damaged because of the renovation work you are doing
  • Legal expenses should there be a dispute between you and a neighbour or you and a contractor
  • Alternative accommodation should the works mean that the property needs to be vacate

What types of projects need renovation insurance?

This is a question we get asked a lot, and the simple answer is… there isn’t a simple answer!  It all depends on what your existing home or commercial property insurance policy will cover you for.  D.I.Y. such as decorating will be covered and some policies will cover you for things like fitting a new kitchen or bathroom, though others won’t.  It’s always better to be on the safe side and either contact your insurer or get some advice from an independent renovation insurance broker such as Coversure Hull by calling 0800 977 6037.  As a guide, the following projects are unlikely to be covered by your standard home contents and buildings insurance and you’ll need home renovation insurance protection in place:

  • Creation of a new basement
  • Loft conversions – some insurers will allow these, but a lot will depend on the size of the property, its age, and whether it has a party wall with neighbouring properties
  • Structural renovations, for example, significant rewiring or re-roofing
  • Alterations to the layout of the house such as an extension
  • Loft, cellar, basement or garage conversions
  • Property conversions such as a commercial property into a residential property or a barn conversion

What types of property can renovation insurance cover?

While its often called home renovation insurance, property renovation insurance through Coversure Hull can cover a wide range of properties, including:

  • Homes
  • Rental properties
  • Commercial properties such as shops and offices
  • Holiday homes and second homes

These are just some of the properties we can cover.  If you have a specific property in mind, then please get in touch.  You can call us free on 0800 977 6037 or start your renovation property insurance quote today.
