What is crane insurance?

Crane insurance protects businesses that hire, lease, or own cranes – be they static or mobile cranes - and other lifting equipment.  It can also protect people who operate them through crane operator's insurance.  This flexible policy can not only insure your equipment and your operators but also cover your public liability insurance needs.

(H2) What can crane insurance cover?

Crane and mobile crane insurance can provide you with many essential protections.  We can tailor cover to your needs, but typical crane insurance policy options include things like:

  • Crane liability – which covers things like loads accidentally dropping, overhead power cables coming down, or the crane toppling owing to weather-softened ground

  • General liability – this protects you against damage to property or injury claims made by a third party

  • Theft and accidental damage

  • Goods on the hook insurance – of up to £50,000

  • Equipment floater – covers equipment while being transported between jobs and includes theft.  This is particularly useful for mobile crane owners and operators

  • Rented equipment – should your crane breakdown and you need to rent one, this will cover the rental costs
  • Auto liability – covers mobile cranes while driven on public roads

  • Owned cranes and mobile cranes

  • Hired-in or leased cranes and mobile cranes – including ongoing hire charges if the item in question is damaged, lost, or stolen

  • Road risks – so you can drive mobile cranes and other lifting equipment on the road

  • Crane operator's insurance – an accident could cause severe injuries to those working on or near a site.  Crane operator's insurance is a form of employers' liability insurance, which can lessen the financial impact if you face a personal injury claim from a crane operator or another employee

(H2) Why does a crane and a crane operator need insurance?

Given the environments in which cranes operate – inner city office construction sites, housing developments, and roads, for example – and the dangerous nature of the work, having specialist crane insurance cover is important.

Cranes and mobile cranes are technically plant equipment, and owners and operators often take out plant insurance.  While that can be sufficient, crane insurance might be a better option for you as it can also protect you from the following:

  • Crane liability and damage to property
  • Injury to employees through employers' liability insurance
  • Theft
  • Road risks
  • Goods on the hook
  • Ongoing hire charges
  • Accidental damage
  • Malicious damage

(H2) How much does crane insurance cost?

At Coversure Hull, we tailor our crane insurance quotes to our clients' needs, so there's no simple answer to that question.  What we can say is that it will be calculated based on things like:

  • The number of cranes or mobile cranes you have – if you have two or more, you may want to consider an adapted plant insurance policy
  • The value of your cranes
  • The work you do – if you're operating in high-risk inner-city construction sites or on motorway maintenance, this work will increase your crane insurance quotes
  • The size of your business
  • The clients you work with
  • The turnover of your business
  • Where your crane(s) are stored at night
  • The age and experience of the operators
  • Your business's claims history

(H3) Crane insurance FAQ

Crane and mobile crane insurance can be a complicated area of cover.  To help you get the protection you need, here is our crane insurance frequently asked questions.  If you'd like some personalised, independent help, please get in touch with us on 0800 977 6037 or email us here.

Q. Why do I need crane Insurance?
A. Crane insurance provides a range of specialist protections for crane owners and operators.  It can cover your cranes, ones you hire or lease, crane operators, and public liability insurance needs all on one policy

Q. Is crane insurance a legal requirement?
A. No, but if you have employees who use cranes, then you will need employers' liability insurance and, ideally, crane operator's insurance

Q. What is a 'hired-in' crane?
A. This is a crane or mobile crane that you hire for a specific job as opposed to equipment that your business owns

Q. Can cranes be insured while being moved to and from sites?
A. Yes, if you have a road risks element to your policy, it will cover mobile cranes while driven on public roads

Q. Does crane insurance cover the hire charges for hired-in plant?
A. Yes, if a hired-in crane is damaged or stolen, you'll usually be liable to continue paying the hire charges, even if you no longer use it.  Most crane insurance policies will cover you for 90 days of fees

Q. If a hired-in crane is damaged, am I liable?
A. Yes, when you hire machinery, it means that you are responsible for that item, and you must ensure you send it back in the condition you hired it.  If a crane you have hired were to break or be damaged and you didn't have hired-in plant insurance, you would have to pay for any repairs
